How to Re-Establish Cycads

When you receive a cycad in the mail, we want you to be able to re-establish it successfully. Preserving the endangered species in your garden is just as important to us as it is to you!

Here are some basic instructions we include with each of our plant shipments:

Re-Establishing Cycads

1. Check for any damaged or broken roots. Clean or cut off damaged areas

2. Dip in a solution that includes a fungicide/bactericide such as Physan or Daconil. If you have a powder that has a fungicide in it, like Rootone, that is even better.

3. Allow treated area(s) to dry.

4. Pot the seedling in pure perlite until it is re-established, and then you can re-pot in a soil mix which includes at least 50% washed silica sand, pumice or perlite. Fill the bottom inch of the pot with gravel, to improve drainage. Do not allow water to gather in a tray below the pot. Cycads do not like to soak in their drainage water.

5. Water in well to ensure roots adhere to soil.

6. Re-water 2 or 3 times the first week, restricting watering thereafter.

7. Re-pot once roots have re-established, usually within 3-9 months.
