It can grow to 30 ft tall over time and its leaves reach over 3.5 ft long. Dioon merolae This Mexican native is a medium-sized, fast growing plant well suited to warm temperate to tropical climates. Its leaves, hairy when immature, are dark green and stiff when mature. This plant can be damaged by frost, so it should be protected where temperatures drop below freezing. Encephalartos altensteinii A robust, tall growing species with deep green glossy leaves. This species, native to the coastal areas of South Africa, is distinguished by its broad, well-spaced, V-shaped leaflets. Full sun or part shade are preferred. Encephalartos trispinosus Among the most popular of the famous blue cycads from South Africa, E. trispinosus is a small to medium sized plant with hard, sharply pointed, blue gray leaves. Prefers full sun. Macrozamia riedlei (Seedling) Native to Australia, M. riedlei likes its summers hot and dry and its winters wet and cold. On mature plants, fine-textured leaflets form a deep V shape on gracefully arching leaves. It will tolerate frequent frosts. |
