This genus diverges from the norm. Zamia species can grow in conditions almost devoid of soil, and Zamia pseudoparasitica specifically can grow on tree limbs, in the same fashion as an orchid. The genus has a Latin name that means loss or damage, but considering the broad spectrum of this genus' natural habitats (the broadest of any cycad genus), neither loss nor damage provides a fitting description.
